Discovery of cementing technology

Old masters only guessed that the hardness of steels can be different, and in many ways it depends on the percentage of carbon. There have been numerous attempts to increase the hardness of mild steels by altering their surface composition by saturating the surface with additional carbon. Evek GmbH offers to buy a wide range of cemented structural alloy steels at an affordable price. We provide delivery of products to any place on the continent. The price is optimal.

Carbon

When heated, carbon is known to react actively with iron to form solid cementite. The most successful method was recognized when a part was heated in a fire to a temperature of about 750...8500 C and it was immersed in a graphite flour (graphite rubbed into flour). To obtain this flour graphite was mixed with charcoal, placed in the heated forge and blown weakly with the help of forge bellows. As a result, the part was heated to temperatures of 900 ... 9500C, when the process of carbon saturation of the surface is the most active. The part was kept in the furnace for at least 2...3 hours, making sure the temperature did not fall.

Technical characteristics

The carburizing of steels is considered optimal if their chemical composition does not contain more than 0,3...0,35% of carbon. After such treatment the carbon content in the surface layer increases to 0,9...1,2%. If subsequently such a part is quenched, the surface layers form a martensite structure characterized by high hardness and strength. The core is not quenched, but acquires a more balanced and fine-grained structure. This enhances the mechanical characteristics of the core, but retains the originally higher toughness values and the ability to withstand shock loads.

Use

Cementation is most often used for products that work under conditions of constant friction and wear and whose operating temperatures do not exceed 200 °C. For the practical implementation of the process, substances containing carbon - carburizers - are used in modern production conditions. Under the influence of permanently elevated temperatures, carbureurisers dissociate, releasing atomic carbon. It diffuses into the surface layers of the cemented product. Carburizers are divided into solid, liquid and gaseous. Cementation with gaseous carburizers is considered to be more productive.
