Peculiarities of gas welding of brass

The presence of zinc in the composition of brass of any brand reduces the thermal conductivity of the alloy and forces the use of reduced values of thermal power of the flame. Acetylene is used as a combustible gas. Its specific consumption (not more than 115...120 l/h per millimeter of thickness of the welded products) is determined by the intensity of zinc evaporation. This process starts above 900 °C, and is distinguished by the toxicity of the released vapors and undesirable overheating of the weld pool.

Zinc Loss

Burning of zinc during welding disrupts the homogeneity of the weld and increases the porosity of the weld. All of these features require the presence of a silicon compound to protect against active oxidation. Silicon binds oxides formed during the welding process and subsequently converts them into slag. The loss of zinc is reduced by several times.

Protection of welds

The use of gaseous slag is recommended in gas welding of brass. Their presence gives the finished weld strength and ductility. Once the welding is completed, the seam area is immediately forged to avoid unwanted grain growth and the resulting unevenness in mechanical properties. Supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy brass rolled products of domestic and foreign production at reasonable price in wide assortment. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. Welding technology

Above-described nuances of gas welding of brass determine a high rate of movement of the gas torch, with a simultaneous need to fill the area of the weld as fully as possible. Flame length should not be more than 6...10 mm and the flame should be mostly directed to the filler wire.

Deposition

When the weld is ready, it is processed by upsetting, for which pneumatic hammers are used. The degree of deformation during forging should not exceed 30...40%. Manual forging impairs the uniformity of mechanical properties of the alloy.

Annealing

After upsetting, the finished structure is annealed. The annealing temperature, depending on the brand of brass varies between 600...650°C, and the subsequent cooling must take place together with the furnace.

Alternative to acetylene

Since the required flame temperature for gas welding is lower than usual, other combustible gases - propane-butane mixture or even kerosene - can be used instead of acetylene. In this case the economy of the process increases. Oxygen consumption is set higher than usual so that the flame is predominantly oxidative.
