History of tin solder

Soldering as a method of inseparable connection of metal products has been known to mankind since ancient times. Already in Ancient Rome, Egypt and China brazing was used for the production of complex jewelry and household items. This is confirmed by numerous results of archaeological research. For example, during the excavations of ancient Babylon gold vessels with handles attached by soldering were discovered, and ancient Roman water pipes made of lead pipes were soldered with tin-lead solder. Similarly the elements of water pipes were fastened in Ancient Libya and Nubia. Solder was made by grinding tin into a fine powder that melted easily. Later on, to make solder stronger, they added lead and antimony, also well known to the craftsmen of the past.

PIC alloys

The performance of solder alloys is determined by the strength of the formed solder seam, in particular the shear strength. Characteristically, tin-lead solders containing 18 to 40% tin have higher shear strengths than pure tin and lead alone.

Interchangeability

In the practice of regular soldering operations, solder interchangeability is important. A tin-lead solder with 50% Sn for soldering parts that are not expected to be under significant operating stress is often replaced by solder PIC 40 or even solder with 30% Sn. The supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy any solder at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products anywhere in the continent. The price is optimal.

Viscosity

An important technological characteristic of tin solders is their toughness. It increases with increasing lead in the alloy. Toughness of solder joints made with 18% tin and 40% tin does not differ much from each other.

Hardness

The value and durability of a solder joint increases with its hardness. Harder brazing alloys offer better resistance to frictional abrasion processes, which is why silver is sometimes added to the chemical composition of tin brazing alloys (solder brands POSS). In particular, silver-containing alloy of POSSu 4-6 grade is equal to solder of POSSu 30 grade with respect to strength of solder seam.

Vibration Load

Since tin resists vibration loads better, brazing alloys with higher tin content of 60% or even 90% are used for joining of parts operating under intensive dynamic loads, with impact.

Tinning

In addition to soldering, lead free solders are also used for tinning of copper and copper alloys. These brazing alloys are most commonly used in joining copper pipes and fittings. The addition of silver to the lead free solder allows you to make high quality connection of copper pipes with increased diameter.
