Interesting things about alloy steel

What is alloying

Alloying (German: legieren, from Lat. ligare - "to bind") is the addition of impurities into materials to optimize (improve) the physical and chemical properties of the basic material. Alloying is a generalizing concept of a number of technological processes. There are three types of alloying: bulk (metallurgical) and surface (ionic, diffusion).

Alloying technologies

Different sectors use different kinds of alloying. In metallurgy alloying is carried out mainly by introducing additional chemical elements into the melt or charge (for example, into steel - chromium, nickel, molybdenum) that improve mechanical, physical and chemical properties of the alloy. To improve the properties (increase the hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance , etc.) of the surface layer of metals and alloys are also used different types of surface alloying. Alloying is carried out at various stages of obtaining metallic material in order to improve the quality of metallurgical products and metal products. In the production of special types of glass and ceramics surface alloying is often carried out. In contrast to spraying and other coatings, alloying agents diffuse into the alloyed material and become part of its structure.

Microalloying

In the manufacture of semiconductor devices, doping is the introduction of small amounts of impurities by using nanotechnology to produce controlled changes in the electrical properties of the semiconductor, in particular, its conductivity parameters.
