Marking of alloy tool steels is determined by the provisions of GOST 5950−2000 (the bulk of the steels of this type) and GOST 19265−73 for high-speed steel.
In the first case the marking is traditional, and includes alphanumeric characters the content and type of alloying elements. GOST 5950−2000 applies to the following grades of alloy tool steels:

- high-alloy tool — X12, KH12VMF, KH12MF, KH12F1, 05KH12N6D2MFSGT.

The designation marks the first digits indicates the mass fraction of carbon in tenths of a percent. They can be omitted if the mass fraction of carbon is close to unity or greater than unity. Letters indicate: G — manganese, — silicon, X — chromium, — tungsten, f — vanadium, Ni is Nickel, M is molybdenum. The figures after the letters indicate the average mass fraction of the respective alloying element in integer units. The lack of numbers means that the mass proportion of this dopant element is about 1%. In some cases, the mass fraction of alloying elements is not specified, if it does not exceed 1.8%.

Steel stamps letters and numbers mean: P — high speed; the figure following the letter, is the average mass fraction of tungsten, M — molybdenum, f — vanadium, cobalt, And nitrogen; the numbers following the letters indicate respectively the mass percent of molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt; W — electroslag remelting.
In the designation of steel grades do not indicate mass fraction:
chrome — with any mass fraction,
molybdenum up to 1%, inclusive,
vanadium in steel grades R18, R6M5, R9K5, R6M5K5, and R9M4K8 R2AM9K5,
nitrogen in steel grades 11R3AM3F2 and R2AM9K5.
At customer’s request, produce steel of grade R6M5 and R6M5F3 by doping with nitrogen (mass fraction of nitrogen from 0.05% to 0.10%). In this case, the designation marks — R6AM5 and R6AM5F3.
