Technical characteristics

Tin containing solder can successfully braze metals like steel, copper, lead, zinc and alloys of these metals with each other. Tin solders are available as wires, cast rods, as well as powders or individual grains. Solders may also be included in flux pastes. The purpose of the fluxes is to prevent the surface in the soldering zone from oxidizing by the oxygen in the air. Zinc chloride, rosin, ammonia or some specially produced pastes are used as fluxes for tin solders.

Flux

Each of the fluxes has rational applications. For example, zinc chloride is effective for soldering steels, but when joining galvanized products, it destroys the surface protective layer, and provokes the subsequent corrosion of the connection site. To eliminate this disadvantage an aqueous ammonia solution is added to zinc chloride. Rosin is not corrosive, but is not very active as a flux and is therefore not suitable for connection of connections which are not exposed to stress during operation (e.g. soldering of apparatuses and radio devices). Sequence of soldering with tin

The process consists of the following steps:

  • Heating up the soldering iron to temperatures corresponding to reliable solder melting (for small parts these temperatures are in the range of 250...300°С, for larger parts - 300...400°С);
  • Plunging the soldering iron tip into the zinc chloride solution (to remove the scale layer);
  • Grabbing required amount of solder from the rod/wire;
  • Burnishing the surface of the soldering iron tip so that the solder is distributed as evenly as possible over the surface;
  • Etching the soldering point with flux;
  • Heat the joint by slowly moving the soldering iron along the joint;
  • Blow through the seam in order to cool it; then control the quality of soldering metal with tin.
