Nichrome has a good combination of heat resistance and high electrical resistance. The minimum coefficient of thermal expansion allows the wire to SAG at significant temperatures. Surface oxides of chromium and Nickel gives the alloy excellent corrosion resistance, allowing it to be used in aggressive environments. Plasticity allows laminating the thinnest wire and tape in a cold state. The heat resistance helps to maintain the fragments of Nickel alloys mechanical loads without deformation or destruction. Perhaps the only disadvantage of this alloy is quite expensive. To make it cheaper have been developed ferrochrome in which part of expensive Nickel replaced by iron. Ferrochrome has not lost a high electrical resistance. Sufficient heat resistance allows their use in the temperature range 1200−1250°C. But with loss of Nickel ferrochrome also lost the plasticity, of them harder to pull thin filament required for reliable operation of the heating elements. Because often they serve as the basis of heat-resistant parts, which are not subject to severe loads at t° >1000 °C.
New Nickel-chromium alloys, Х20Н30 and Х20Н35 compared to the classical CR20NI80 more economical and successfully used in modern industry. They are resistant to aggressive industrial environment, used for high temperature rheostats, resistors, heating elements, industrial heat furnaces. Can be applied by thermal spraying on a heat resistant parts of turbojet engines.
