Nitriding as a process that increases the strength, wear resistance and surface hardness of alloy steels is itself a kind of chemical heat treatment, so it is carried out at the final stages of the technological process of parts production.

Heat treatment sequence

Improving is carried out beforehand: hardening and subsequent high tempering at temperatures of 500-700°С (tempering temperature increases with increasing carbon content of nitrided steel). Finishing

Consists in the sequential performance of the following technological transitions:

  • Cleaning the finished products of contaminants and traces of scale/rust;
  • Phosphating (only for critical products);
  • Loading in the muffle furnace so that the adjacent surfaces of the parts do not touch each other;
  • Muffle tightness test, after which the furnace is turned on and heated to 120 ... 150 ° C;
  • Passage of ammonia under pressure of 35 ... 50 mm Hg at a temperature of 500 ... 570°С in the furnace. The duration of the process is calculated on the assumption that no less than 14-15 hours are required to obtain a 1 mm nitrated layer;
  • Slow cooling along with the furnace to a temperature of 300 ... 3500 ° C and then stop feeding ammonia;
  • Control the hardness of the finished product.
