The cementation process is carried out in the solid carburetor at t° 980...1020°C. The process lasts between 3...5 hours, the steels are quenched in oil and tempered at 150-180°C. If the percentage of carbon rises by 20...30 % (and the hardness rises correspondingly) the ductility of such steels decreases. This makes it impossible to use them in assemblies that function under conditions of increased dynamic and impact loads.

Case hardening of high-chromium steels

The carburizing process involves the use of a hard carburetor (soda bicarbon + charcoal). The carburizing process is carried out at 950-1000°C for 6-8 hours. Subsequent heat treatment includes hardening from 930 ... 960°С and low tempering (180 ... 200°С). Thickness of thermally changed layer reaches 0.3...0.4 mm and its hardness 60...65 HRC. The structure of steel after carburizing is martensite with evenly distributed round carbides. The hardness of steel core is 38...42 HRC.

Application

Zeutectoidal alloyed steel alloys are carburized in the hard carburizer at temperatures of 890...920°C for 9...12 h. Then the steels are slowly cooled, and then a second heating follows - under hardening. This heating is carried out to temperatures of 790 ... 820°С. After that the parts are cooled down by a water stream (blowing) to the temperatures of 100...1500°С, and the final cooling is conducted in oil. The last operation of the technological process is tempering at 150 ... 170°С. Carbon content in the surface layers amounts to 1,5 ... 1,6%, with the carbide-enriched zone depth of 0,1 ... 0,15 mm and hardness up to 60 ... 62 HRC.
