Magnesium applications in electronics

Physical properties

It is a very light, fusible metal, its density is about 1.7 g/cm³ at 20 °C, and its melting point = 650 °C. Its surface is covered by an oxide film, which breaks down at 623 °C, after which Mg burns off. Powders of potassium permanganate and magnesium are explosive.

Manufacturability

This is one of the most technologically advanced metals. But its alloys are more valuable as a construction material. Magnesium can form corrosion-resistant materials with high specific strength in combination with many metals.

Electrical engineering

Rolled magnesium alloys are used by electronics and instrument-making industry for making instrument parts, bodies of cameras, cell phones, binoculars, portable video-cameras. Magnesium alloys are also used for production of electric batteries while low thermal neutron absorption and absence of interaction with uranium were the reasons to magnesium-based fuel elements of nuclear boilers.
