Principles for selecting die steels

The European Federal Standard defines a division of die steels into two groups - alloyed and unalloyed. The criterion of alloyability is the critical value of the cooling rate of the alloy during its hardening. All stamped steel alloys included in the European Federal Standard are characterized by cross-sectional through hardenability and low cooling rates, which are achieved not only during quenching in water, but even in oil or air. This results in improved dimensional stability and minimization of thermal stresses. Hence, there is no warping of tools made of these steels.

Alloying

The alloying components in the die steels covered by the European Federal Standard are tungsten, chromium, vanadium and molybdenum. Accordingly, this Federal Standard applies to the following groups of die steels:

  • Chromium-vanadium-tungsten;
  • Chromium;
  • Tungsten-chromium-vanadium;
  • Chrome-silicon;
  • Chromium-manganese steels;
  • Nickel-chromium.
