Technical Characteristics

In alloys of niobium with tantalum the minimum oxidation rate at high temperatures has a composition containing about 33% Ta and that small additions of zirconium cause dispersion hardening of this alloy without increasing its oxidation rate. A niobium-based structural material containing 33% Ta, 0.8% Zr was created. This ternary composition is superior to niobium or tantalum alloys in terms of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. In addition, this composition has a very valuable combination of other properties, such as machinability, low-temperature ductility and weldability.

Tungsten Additives

Tungsten contributes to effective hardening as well as greatly increasing the high-temperature strength of Ta-W and Nb-W double alloys. It is known that tungsten in an amount of up to 10% (by mass) does not impair the oxidizability of the initial ternary alloy. Such an alloy has an optimal combination of the following properties: high-temperature strength, high strength-to-weight ratio, machinability, ductility at low temperatures, weldability and oxidation resistance.
