Aluminum alloys with manganese and magnesium

AMZ

The alloy contains: 1.0-1.6% Mn; 0.7% Fe; 0.6% Si, 0.2% Cu and Ti each; 0.1% Zn; 0.05% Mg; the rest Al. Such alloys are not hardenable by heat treatment, they deform both in hot and in cold state. Increases ductility by annealing at 350-410°C. Corrosion resistance of the alloy (and the weld) is high, almost the same as that of pure aluminum. The alloy is available to all types of welding and satisfactorily soldered, but poorly cut. It is used for production of welded tanks, oil and gas pipes, automobile radiators and kitchenware.

AMg1, AMg2, AMgZ, AMg4, AMg5, AMg6. General characteristics

Alloys based on Al-Mg - Magnesium. deform well in hot and cold condition. With increasing the percentage of magnesium over five (АМг5, АМг6) alloys are deformed poorly - they quickly harden and require repeated annealing.
Alloys based on Al-Mg are corrosion-resistant and are not prone to corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion (especially in annealed state). The corrosion resistance of welds is similar to that of the base material. The corrosion resistance of alloy AMg6 depends mainly on the annealing temperature. The optimum temperature is 265-285 ° C, especially for the annealed material. Satisfactory corrosion resistance can be obtained after final annealing at 310 °C. For additional corrosion protection, anodizing or paint coatings can be applied. For example, rivets made of AMg5P alloy are anodized.

Processing

Alloys are welded quite easily by argon-arc, contact spot and roller welding. For the filler material is suitable base alloy wire (for the alloy AMg2 - wire AMgZ). Plasticity of welds is high, and the strength is not less than 90% of the basic material. The more alloyed the alloy, the easier it is to cut. Alloys AMg1 and AMg2 are poorly cut in annealed condition and satisfactorily cut in annealed condition; alloys AMgZ and AMg4 cut satisfactorily, and alloys AMg5, AMg5P and AMg6 cut well.

Use

These alloys are suitable for mildly stressed corrosion-resistant welded and riveted structures. Thus, the alloys AMc, AMg2, AMgZ are used to produce pipelines, tanks for gasoline and other liquids, deck superstructures of sea and river vessels, as well as stained glass windows, doors, window frames, partitions. Handles of cans and pots are made of AMz alloy. Alloys AMg5 and AMgb are suitable for medium loaded constructions (frames and bodies of wagons, suspended loaded ceilings, building partitions and bulkheads of ships, electric masts, hulls and masts of ships, elevators, assemblies of cranes, etc .).
