Technical characteristics

With the exception of some hot forming die steels, which contain no more than 0.55% carbon in their composition, other steels are characterized by poor weldability. Therefore, the steels should be annealed before welding and the parts should be heated before welding. The temperature of such heating is determined by the complexity of the part. For tools and punches of relatively simple configuration it is set in the range of 350 ... 400 ° C, for the tool of complex shape preheating is required up to 550 ... 650 ° C. After welding the cold deformed tool steel, which will be working under impact or alternating load, should be immediately subjected to high tempering. If the weld is not applied directly to the working edge (e.g. for knives), pre-tempering is not necessary.

Gas Welding

Gas or manual welding of tool alloyed steels is not made due to the low strength of the metal in the weld zone. The most widespread are the contact electric welding technologies. Evek GmbH offers to buy low-alloy structural steel at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. The price is optimal.

Welding modes of alloyed tool steels

Preparatory operations before welding are:

  • Preparation of allowances for melting. Settling and subsequent machining of the weld area. Allowances for upsetting and trimming of ends are calculated for fusion contact welding, and allowances for trimming of ends are calculated for electric contact welding;
  • Mechanical processing of tool end surfaces. Mechanical machining of the tool face is used to minimize possible misalignment of the ends, their ovality, curvature of the axis, etc;
  • Cleaning of tool surfaces made of tool alloy steels from dirt, traces of scale, oxide films and residues of technological grease.

Friction or flash-butt welding

Workpieces are rotated at different angular speeds. Welding is carried out on special machines for friction welding. Basic process parameters are deposition pressure, heating pressure, heating time, deposition time. Minimal energy consumption is achieved, and the quality of the surface of the welded joint is uniform over the entire surface. The process is environmentally friendly as it produces no harmful welding gases, no ultra-violet radiation, and the operation is easily automated.

Contact Electric Welding

If the area of contact surfaces exceeds 1300 mm2 (diameter of workpieces over 40 mm), contact electric welding is used. For electric resistance welding, the welding current density, the operating voltage at the clamping jaws of the electric resistance welding machine as well as the deposition time and pressure must be determined. The process of electric resistance welding of tool alloyed steels is carried out in three stages. The first step is pre-heating, followed by flashing and then upsetting, which leads to the joining of the pieces. After welding annealing of blanks, which aims to remove internal stresses that occur during welding.
