Casting babbitted liners

Are you interested in babbitt casting? The supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy babbitt at an affordable price in a wide range of products. We provide delivery of products to any point on the continent. Price is optimal.

Preparation of bearing surface for casting

Before pouring it is necessary:

  • Melt the old babbit from the liner;
  • Degrease and etch the surface;
  • De-grease and etch the surface;
  • Melt the babbit, and prepare it for casting.

Melting out the babbitt that remains on the surface is carried out by heating the surface (large bearings are heated in furnaces), or by dipping the bearing into the babbitt melt (for babbitt brands BT or BN). The heating should be uniform, and the direction of the flame torch should be on the opposite side.

Improving grip

To improve the bond between the babbitt and the base metal, the bearing liner should be carefully cleaned of dirt, washed hot and then cold, then degreased for at least one minute in a boiling 10% aqueous solution of industrial soda. Then the remaining soda is removed from the surface by successive washing in hot and cold water.

Etching

Etching is necessary to create small surface irregularities that increase the bond between the liners and the babbitt. Medium sulphuric or hydrochloric acid solutions are used. The parts are washed in a warm caustic soda solution; the final surface should be a uniform color, without any yellowish colour.

Tinning

Surfaces to be tinned are subjected to double fluxing, after which the bearing is heated to temperatures of 150 ... 180°C and immersed in the melt for 4 ... 5 minutes. Supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy babbitts of domestic and foreign production at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. Price is optimal.

Casting

The casting process is determined by the design of the bearing. One-piece bearings are poured on a steel pallet, the bottom of which is covered with dry sand. A machined plug is placed in the bearing bore with a diameter that takes into account the allowance for the thickness of the alloy to be poured. For pouring split bearings, their shells are connected together, and thin steel spacers are provided in the end parts to exclude them from the alloy. Pouring is done with a ladle, with a steady stream of melt. For this purpose, mechanized, centrifugal pouring is used instead of low-productive manual pouring. In this case, the bearing to be poured is placed in a special machine, - if it is not available - in a special attachment to the lathe.

Quality

Casting babbitt alloys with a centrifugal casting process provides the highest quality. The process is carried out in special chambers where the babbitt melt is fed to the liner to be cast at an increased pressure of 6...6 atm. The pressure is created by a pump or compressed air from a compressor unit.
