Preparing the bearing surface for casting
Before pouring it is necessary:
- Remove the old babbitt from the liner;
- Degrease and etch surface;
- Tear the surface;
- Melt the babbitt, and prepare it for pouring.
The melting of the babbitt remaining on the surface is performed by heating the surface (for large bearings the process is carried out in furnaces) or by immersing the bearing in a babbitt melt (for Babbit brands BT or BN). The heating should be uniform, and the direction of the flame should be on the opposite side.
To improve the adhesion of babbitt to the base metal, the bearing liner is thoroughly cleaned of dirt, washed with hot water and then with cold water, after which it is degreased for at least a minute in a boiling 10% aqueous solution of technical soda. Then the residue of soda is removed from the surface, for which, the part should be washed in succession in hot and cold water.
Etching is necessary for the formation of shallow surface irregularities, which increase the bonding strength of the inserts with babbitt. Solutions of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid of medium concentrations are used. The part is washed in a preheated alkaline solution of caustic soda: the final surface must have a uniform color, without signs of yellowing.
Surfaces to be tin-plated are subjected to double fluxing, after which the bearing is heated to temperatures of 150… 180 ° C and immersed in the melt for 4… 5 minutes.
