Advantages
Tungsten sheet or tungsten plate is exceptional construction material. It is extremely heat resistant and has high elasticity and strength. Tungsten sheet is resistant to corrosion and many corrosive factors. It has a significant electrical resistance, high resistance to thermal creep, good thermal conductivity. Reliability and durability of tungsten sheet in extreme conditions made it irreplaceable in modern science and technology.
Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of tungsten sheet is the cost. Tungsten is a rare metal, it is difficult to isolate in pure form.
Production
Source rods are pressed into flat bars, which are heated and rolled unchain high speed until hot tungsten. To not let tungsten oxidized at high temperature, shell plating or metal rolling are used. The thinner the sheet, the less heat it requires to process, very thin sheet rolled at room temperature. The laminated sheet surface is very smooth. Sheet can be stamped and embossed in the products of different forms. Under these operations (stamping, forging, cutting, bending), tungsten is heated again, to prevent oxidation and protect it by hydrogen atmosphere. Surface oxides are removed with hot sodium hydroxide solution or calcination in hydrogen atmosphere at 1000 °.
Tungsten sheets and tungsten plates joining may be done by spot or seam welding. However, the seam is always recrystallized, fragile. The most reliable are riveted joints. Tungsten sheet is easily soldered with copper, nickel and silver in a protective non-oxidizing atmosphere. For the electronic bulbs manufacture tungsten welded with nickel by resistance method.
Tungsten sheet is used in radio and X-ray techniques for different parts of electronic valves, tubes and similar devices, for heat-resistant thermal barrier, making boats, heat-resistant containers, etc. Tungsten strip is used for electric stream entries making, for light bulbs and electric heaters. Modern industry development has stimulated the demand for tungsten sheet. Tungsten sheet is also made of tungsten foil.
