Advantages of a tungsten wheel

Tungsten is the most refractory of the metals, so tungsten wheel has exceptional heat resistance and heat resistance. It has excellent mechanical properties: wear resistance, hardness under severe heat, and the lowest thermal expansion coefficient among metals. Tungsten wheel has good thermal conductivity, a very high thermal creep resistance and a very high modulus of elasticity. It is resistant to corrosion, alkalis and acids, including concentrated solutions of hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acids and aqua regia. Disadvantages

The main disadvantage is considered a high cost. Tungsten is a rare metal, it is quite difficult to isolate in its pure form, it is refractory and capricious in processing. At ordinary temperatures, tungsten is not ductile enough. It is also very heavy, like gold.

Production

Powder metallurgy is first used to make billets. Technological ductility of tungsten is low, but with increasing temperature improves without loss of strength. Therefore, tungsten circle is obtained by hot working under pressure. Special means of heat treatment and modern technologies of chemical protection are used, as red-hot tungsten easily interacts with atmospheric gases. Billets are shaped by hot rolling, drawing or pressing in accordance with GOST 25 501-82. Tungsten circles of various purposes (VRN) and VA grade, with silicon and aluminum additives, are produced in diameter of 1-10 mm. The quality of production is controlled at all stages.

Use

Thin tungsten discs Ø 1.6; 2; 3; 4 mm are indispensable as non-consumable electrodes in arc welding; in electronic and electrotechnical industry - for a special type of contacts soldered into the glass, through which current flows to the electric vacuum devices. Depending on the diameter, surface condition and grade, the wheels are subsequently used to manufacture direct-fired cathodes in ion-implantation sources and various types of heaters, e.g. in the glass industry for fusing electrodes and molten glass stirrers.
