Alloy ML5-2

Designation

Name The value
Designation GOST Cyrillic МЛ5-2
Designation GOST Latin ML5-2
Transliteration ML5-2
By chemical elements CuЛ5-2

Description

Alloy ML5−2 is used: for the manufacture by sand casting, gravity die casting, pressure loaded parts of complex configuration, designed for operation in atmospheric conditions, including in areas with warm humid climate according to GOST 16350 for up to 5 years; parts of aircraft (parts management, parts of the wings, farm gear, buildings machines and devices) with maximum working temperature up to +150 °C (long-term), up to +250 °C (short-term).

Note

Alloy system Mg-Al-Zn.
Alloy ML5−2 has the best casting, mechanical and technological properties than alloy ML5.
Aluminum and zinc increase the mechanical properties of the alloy (and the effect of aluminum effect is stronger than zinc) and manganese improves corrosion resistance. To reduce oxidation, the alloy contains beryllium.

Mg is the basis.
According to OST 3-4132-78 the sum of REM should be in the range of 0.030-0.30%, the sum of impurities being determined is 0.50%. The sum of REM means elements that are part of a cerium mischmetal containing at least 45% cerium. For parts designed to work in areas with a warm, humid climate, as well as for long-term storage and use, the impurity content should not exceed: silicon ≤ 0.15%, iron ≤ 0.020%, copper ≤ 0.040%, nickel ≤ 0.0050% .

Technological properties

Name The value
Features of heat treatment The alloy can strengthen its positions heat treatment - quenching and aging.
Corrosion resistance The alloy increased corrosion resistance compared to alloy ML5. Parts should be corrosion protection by applying an oxide coating according to GOST 9.025 and coatings for OST 3-1928. 3-1460.
Casting The alloy has a broader crystallization range than alloys based on aluminum, therefore has a low castability. Due to the large interval of crystallization of the alloy is prone to hot cracks.
