Molybdenum sheet

"Without music, life would lose much," Nietzsche once remarked. As for metallurgy, it is no exaggeration to say that modern metallurgy would be lost without rare and refractory metals.

Advantages of Molybdenum

Molybdenum sheet is a heat-resistant material with rare structural and performance qualities. Due to its exceptional strength, elasticity, heat resistance and minimal coefficient of linear expansion, it is widely sought after by modern industry today. It can withstand temperatures up to 1000 °C higher than titanium and is resistant to aggressive industrial environments and to concentrated acids and alkalis. It is almost 50% lighter than tungsten and therefore has a higher specific strength at 1370 °C.

Disadvantages

The considerable cost of production is due to the fact that rocks containing molybdenum are rare minerals. In pure form, molybdenum is difficult to isolate, it is refractory and difficult to process.

Production

M-MP molybdenum alloy sheets are produced: 1 to 30 mm thick (hot-rolled) and 0.1 to 0.9 mm thick (cold-rolled). GOST 17 431-72.

Application

Molybdenum sheet is used for heat-resistant heat shielding, the manufacture of boats, heat-resistant containers, etc . Due to the same coefficient of thermal expansion as glass, molybdenum sheet of MCh and MCVP grades is used for the manufacture of electrical current inputs in light bulbs and electrical vacuum devices. It is used for heating elements of electric furnaces operating in hydrogen atmosphere at t° up to 1600 °C. Molybdenum tin is used in radioelectronics and X-ray engineering for parts of X-ray tubes and other vacuum devices.
