Titanium applications

Relevance

titanium has not had time to be widely used in mechanical engineering. This is explained by the fact that until recently the practical properties of titanium alloys were poorly studied. Only recently, data have appeared about their competitiveness and efficient use in machine and mechanism designs. But the main reason is the high cost and scarcity of the material. In some cases, low antifriction properties of titanium alloys and their poor weldability to other metals are negative factors. In the domestic industry, titanium alloys are used in chemical, power, heavy and transport machine building, as well as in machine building for food and light industries and construction of household appliances.

Equipment

Industry produces two groups of equipment: standard and non-standard. The first is serially produced by specialized machine-building plants, and the second is produced by factories to meet their own needs. Standard equipment is manufactured by chemical engineering plants. The nomenclature of production of these plants is quite extensive and includes pumping, stopping, column, vessel, autoclave, filtering, separating and special equipment. Let's have a look at each of them. Stop valves: these are all kinds of valves, check and ball valves. Pumping equipment. Pumps are used for pumping corrosive media at high temperatures. Flow part of equipment must have high corrosion resistance. Today, pumps are mostly made of titanium alloys. Tanks. Used for storage, mixing, crystallization and heat treatment. Requirements for them are the same as for all equipment that works with corrosive media. Nowadays expensive nickel-containing steels are used for manufacturing of vessels. But we have to leave a big allowance for corrosion mass, and this is absolutely uneconomical. Besides, corrosion products negatively affect quality of produced goods. Now manufacturing of capacitive equipment from titanium has been mastered. It is produced only at several plants: Progress (Berdichev) and machine building plant named after Frunze (Sumy), Uzbekhimmash (Chirchik) and Uralhimmash (Sverdlovsk). Column equipment. Titanium alloys are widely used in the structures of towers and adsorbers, as well as in the form of disc, packed, rectification and atomizing columns.

Heat-exchange apparatus

Titanium alloys are used for heating, cooling, boiling, evaporation and condensation of aggressive media. The corrosive media can be liquid, pasty, solid, gas and vapor. Heat exchanger designs are widely used. These can be jacketed, spiral, coil, double tube, shell and tube or finned surface heat exchangers. The main objective in their production is to increase corrosion resistance, while keeping the walls thin enough for efficient heat transfer. Titanium alloys are the most suitable material to meet these conditions. Titanium alloys are also less prone to wetting and sedimentation on the surface. This results in a high heat transfer coefficient for more effective cooling of the apparatus.

Filters.

Filtration is widely used in all industries to separate liquid from suspended solids. There are various designs of industrial filters. There are automatic titanium filter presses, which are designed for filtration of aggressive suspensions at high temperatures. Parts of filter presses that come into contact with aggressive media are made of titanium alloys.

Non-standard equipment.

Many nonferrous metallurgy and chemical companies have mastered the production of titanium equipment for their own needs. For example, Norilsk combine Severonickel has developed its own designs of 7KTS-9.7 KTS-13 titanium pumps. In cooperation with other organizations the combine has developed a design of automatic filter-press FPAKM, different electrostatic precipitators and reactors, shutoff valves and a lot of other equipment. There is a specialized site at this combine, where advanced methods of titanium processing and welding are mastered.

The mining and smelting works in Norilsk uses titanium for producing process equipment and for producing nonferrous metals. The Norilsk combine has long mastered the technique of making titanium equipment. In 1967 a special department for welding, cold working, forging and stamping of titanium was created. Centralized production of equipment made it possible to improve its quality. The plant developed and mastered the production of shut-off valves, thickener filters, pipelines, washing towers, wet electric filters, heat exchangers, cyclones, etc.

Balkhash mining and metallurgical combine. Here they have mastered the methods of titanium processing in order to produce non-standard equipment for their own exploitation. Due to the absence of large overheads, the cost of this equipment is much lower than that of specialized enterprises.

Non-ferrous metallurgy

The list of non-standard equipment that is made of titanium alloys at the enterprises is very large and diverse. As an example, we can consider types of large non-standard equipment used in non-ferrous metallurgy. These include: chokes, fan impellers, gas ducts, furnace leakages, baths, splash tanks, various vessels, electrofilter electrodes, autoclaves, reactors, containers, vacuum filters, adsorbers, evaporators and many others.

Energetics

Titanium is used in products that have rotating parts. These are various centrifuges, separators, compressors, dryers, compressors, etc. Titanium plays an insignificant role in power engineering, but is nevertheless used in some cases. Titanium alloys in power engineering are advantageous for economic and technical reasons. A big advantage is the high specific strength required for the production of long steam turbine blades. Already the first experience of using titanium blades in turbines provided positive results. Leningradsky Metallichesky Zavod has long experience in exploitation of titanium blades in turbines, which proved good performance of this material. Under conditions of wet steam exposure, titanium blades are superior to steel ones in corrosion and erosion resistance.
