The first springs

The first springs were made of wood and - later - bronze. Naturally, they could not meet the ever-increasing demands for strength and elasticity of the material. The ancient Greek engineer Ctesibius invented a way to increase the elastic characteristics of bronze. After casting, the bronze was forged by blows with a hand hammer and then used for its intended purpose. Only flat springs could be made that way.

The first spring steels

The first spring steel alloys were melted in England during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. English watchmakers found that adding increased amounts of carbon and silicon to ordinary steel not only increased the hardness of the metal, but also contributed to the elasticity of the material. At the same time it was established that the spring wire or bar is better produced by hot forging with hammers: the fine grain structure of steel increases the fluidity considerably.

Production and heat treatment of springs

In the 18th century, an Englishman J. Brama invented a spring coiling machine, for which some components of the already known by that time lathe were used. Later, the technology of spring steel hardening was perfected, so that the final products were both strong, durable and resilient. History of spring steels

The leaf spring, as a flat multi-layer spring, was invented almost simultaneously with the wheel, because all vehicles of antiquity quickly failed when driving on uneven roads. There was a need to create an additional elastic support that would compensate for road unevenness. This support became the leaf spring - first a single-layer one, and later a multi-layer one.

Composition of

In the beginning, strip steel was used to make springs. However, in the 15th century it became clear that ordinary steel deformed quickly, so the first springs did not serve long. The addition of carbon and silicon to the chemical composition revealed an increase in the elastic properties of the material and its strength, especially under dynamic loads. Unlike springs, springs were made of strip steel, which was then heat-treated. And in the 20th century it was learned how to alloy leaf spring steel with vanadium, chromium and similar elements, providing the leaf springs with increased resistance and durability.
