History of Rolled Steel

Rolling is one of the oldest technological methods of plastic deformation of metals. The schematic diagram and then drawings of a rolling mill for rolling of lead sheets were developed by the famous L. Da Vinci. During the Renaissance, it was also found that the main material property of the rolling rolls was their smoothness and ability to withstand significant deformation loads of the process without flaking of material particles.

Alternative to roll steels

Cast iron, which was already being produced at that time, was considered as an alternative to roll steel. The advantage of cast iron was that the amount of carbon as the main carbide-forming material in it was higher than in steels, so the hardness of cast iron rolls was higher. However, rolling at the initial impact load (the first stands) turned out to be unprofitable because cast iron rolls quickly splintered.

The Industrial Revolution

During the Industrial Revolution and later, with the birth of the scientific foundations of materials science, the work to create roll steel suitable for long-term use was intensified. Evek GmbH offers you to buy roll steel at an affordable price in a wide range of products. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. The price is optimal.

Optimizing the composition of roll steels

Experiments to identify the best chemical composition of roll steels were conducted with the following information in mind:

  • An increase in the percentage of carbon increased the strength of the rolls, especially in the range of 0.8...1.2%;
  • The purification of the melt from harmful non-metallic inclusions occurs with the introduction of manganese in the melt. It was found out later that manganese provides spheroidization of carbides and increases uniformity of their distribution over the volume. The maximum allowable content of manganese in modern roll steels is 1.5...2.0%;
  • Similarly to manganese, as it was found, acts and silicon, however, its percentage in roll steels should not be higher than 1.2 ... 1.5%;
  • The fine-grained structure and uniform strength across the cross-section of the ingot, from which rolls are subsequently produced, provides the presence in the steel of nickel, chromium and molybdenum.

Currently, cast iron rolling rolls of special cast iron are used for rolling of stainless steels, in other cases for the manufacture of rolling rolls use roll steel.
