Advantages of tungsten foil

Tungsten foil is a final rolled product - an extremely thin sheet of 0.03 - 0.09 mm thickness. It is exceptionally heat-resistant and heat-resistant, has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, high resistance to thermal creep, good thermal conductivity and a high electron emission coefficient. This foil has a high tensile and compression modulus. It is resistant to corrosion, the action of alkalis and acids, including concentrated solutions of hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acids, aqua regia. Strength, chemical resistance and biological safety all make tungsten foil suitable for use in a wide variety of industries.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of such foil is considered to be the cost of production. Tungsten refers to a rare metal, it is quite difficult to isolate in pure form, it is heavy, refractory and capricious in processing.

Production

Tungsten is produced from certified tungsten of 99.95% purity using high-precision "cold-hot" equipment. The quality of production is controlled at all stages. First, the stack is pressed into flat billets that are heated and then cracked at high speed while the tungsten is hot. Since hot tungsten is easily oxidized by atmospheric gases, chemical protection techniques are used, and the clad rolling is clad with metals. With the sheet turning into foil, rolling can continue at normal temperatures. The foil acquires a very smooth surface. Surface oxides are removed by hot NaOH solution or by calcining in an atmosphere of H2 at 1000 °C.

Use

Developments in modern instrumentation, robotics, mechanical engineering, nuclear power, medicine and petrochemistry have driven the demand for tungsten foil. Tungsten foil is most commonly used:

  • In nuclear power and the military-industrial complex;
  • in industrial chemical synthesis;
  • in the manufacture of heat exchangers;
  • in electronics and radio engineering, in the electrovacuum devices.
