Composition and properties
Martensitic stainless steel grade AISI 416 (1.4005) is a mild steel with a high content of chromium and manganese. Under the name X12CrS13 steel is produced in Europe (mark corresponds to the German DIN standard and technical requirements for production — standards UNS S 41600). The closest Russian analogue — stainless steel 08KH13 GOST 5632.

As impurities in the composition of the steel are sulfur (not more than 0.03%) and phosphorus (allowed up to 0.06%).
Among the most important physico-mechanical properties of steel are:
- Limit strength — 520…800 MPa;
- The modulus of elasticity (young) — 210 HPa;
- The coefficient of thermal diffusion — 8.5 m3/s;
- Thermal conductivity is 30 W/MK.
In accordance with recommendations of ASTM A240 this steel is installed as recommended for the production of pressure vessels working under conditions of constant corrosion-mechanical wear. The heat resistance of steel is maintained at the required level before the temperature of 550…6000 C.
Stainless steel AISI 416 (1.4005) responds well to heat treatment. When quenching is the formation of martensitic structure, which provides a material of high wear resistance surface, the resistance against pitting corrosion practically does not change. Steel is not recommended for use in components that operate at lower temperatures because in such conditions the elastic-plastic properties of the material deteriorate.
