Lead Bronze

Technical characteristics

This bronze contains 27 to 63% lead. But lead does not dissolve well in molten copper. Therefore the alloy acquires a granular structure after hardening. This guarantees excellent sliding properties, which are required for the manufacture of friction bearing liners operating under high pressure and at high speeds. The thermal conductivity of this material is four times that of tin bronze.

Liquidation

The alloy has a high propensity for gravitational liquation. This requires special casting measures such as dispersion, accelerated cooling.

Soldering

Lead bronzes can be brazed with solder fluxes similar to those used for brazing tin bronzes. The soldering joints should be fluxed more thoroughly because lead oxide forming on the surface impedes the flow of solder into the gap.

Applications for

High impact toughness, allows the lead alloy to withstand alternating and shock loads. Lead bronze is used as an anti-friction alloy for casting on a steel strip, from which the bearing liner is then made. It is also cast into steel bushes. Lead bronze with 60% Pb contains 2.25 to 2.7% Ni, this increases strength and prevents lead and copper liquation.
