Composition and properties
Stainless steel AISI 317L (1.4438) is a low-carbon austenitic alloy with an increased chromium content (up to 18%) and nickel (up to 13%). The percentage of carbon in steel does not exceed 0.03%, and it is completely bound by iron, representing a solid solution of cementite in the base metal matrix. From these grades, steel is characterized by an elevated (up to 3%) molybdenum content.
The chemical composition of the alloy determines its following features:
- Increased resistance to corrosion, including high temperature.
- High acid resistance.
- Strength at elevated to 1300… 1800 0 С temperatures of long-term operation of products.
- Durability under long loads, not exceeding the tensile strength.
- Satisfactory weldability.
When melting in vacuum furnaces, the alloy is additionally saturated with nitrogen, which then binds to high-strength chromium carbides. The presence of molybdenum promotes the formation of intermetallic compounds, which additionally increases the heat resistance.
AISI 317L steel pipe (1.4438) is widely used in the manufacture of pipelines, through which liquid corrosive media are systematically pumped, including at elevated temperatures. The growth and development of point sources of corrosion in this case is slowed down, which leads to an increase in the service life of the pipelines. Consumers — gas and oil refining industry, as well as the production of various chemical reagents — plant protection products, pharmaceutical semi-finished products, etc.
A circle of this alloy (domestic substitute — steel 03H19N13M3, produced by special specifications) is used in the manufacture of highly resistant reinforcement. At the same time, technologies of cold and hot volumetric stamping are implemented.
Wire made of steel AISI 317L (1.4438) is used in high-precision measuring instruments and equipment, which carries out continuous monitoring of the functioning of steelmaking complexes.
