Magnesium European grades

Technical Characteristics

Magnesium is a very light but weak metal. Its specific gravity is 1.7 g/cm3. Alloys with aluminum, usually designated by the abbreviation am, are of practical importance. For example, am40, am50, am60, contain 4%Al, 5%Al, and 6%Al, respectively. Or az alloys (az31, az61, az91), alloyed with aluminum and zinc.

Production

Magnesium is produced by the electrolysis of molten mixtures of sodium and potassium chloride salts. To get rid of impurities, additional purification is required by electrolytic refining, remelting together with special fluxes in a vacuum. Often sublimation in a vacuum is used. The purity of the refined metal is over 99.999%. Another method is thermal, which is based on the reduction of MgO at high temperature by coke or silicon.

Forecast

Over the last 25 years the production of this metal has increased by almost 2.5 times. The factories that use the electrolytic method, such as US Magnesium and VSMPO-AVIMA, produce magnesium of reference quality. According to IMA analysts, the average annual consumption growth rate from 2013 to 2017 will grow at ~6.6% per year, and 7.1% per year over 2013 to 2022.
