Tin solder

Relevance

Nowadays many tin solders are used which are in great demand by electronics, electrical engineering, automotive industry as well as in installation of climatic equipment. It should be noted that all tin solders are very inexpensive and practical in application and are characterized by high strength, ductility, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance. They can be used for soldering any non-ferrous metals and alloys.

General characteristics

Tin brazing alloys contain such fusible metals as tin, antimony, lead alloyed with aluminum, zinc, cadmium, silver. The brazing strength is up to 8 kg/mm2 and is directly proportional to the tin content of the solder. The presence of antimony usually strengthens the solder joint. But this largely depends on the materials being joined. When joining pure copper - Sb increases the strength of the solder joint, when soldering brass parts, Sb no longer has such an effect, and when soldering iron - reduces the strength of the solder joint.

Zinc is known to increase the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy solder joints. Increased zinc content requires additives such as Ag or Cd. Solders having 10-40% Zn are usually used for tinning/soldering of aluminum alloys by ultrasonic or abrasive methods. As the zinc content increases, the melting point of the solder increases.

Features of application

Soft solders are supplied in the form of sticks, less commonly as a wire with flux placed inside it. The so-called paste can be used, which is powdered solder mixed with flux. However, it should be remembered that the use of paste is associated with a number of peculiarities. For example, zinc chloride is very hygroscopic and if it is not removed from the soldering site, it can provoke corrosion. Do not use ZnCl2 or ammonia when soldering electrical measuring instruments, due to the danger of copper deposits on the copper wires of the instrument, which can cause distorted readings and instrument failure. When soldering with tin solder, rosin is usually used as flux
