Martensitic stainless steel

Composition and properties of martensitic stainless steels

The basic martensitic stainless steels are characterized by high indicators of their wear resistance, which are acquired during heat treatment - hardening.

Characteristically, immediately after rolling these steels are ferritic class materials, they are quite ductile and therefore do not require much energy for their mechanical or deforming treatment.

The approximate composition of martensitic stainless steels is as follows:

Component Carbon Silicon Manganese Chrome Sulfur Phosphorus
Percentage range of the material content Not more than 0.15 0,5...1,5 0,6...1,0 11...15 Up to 0.03 Up to 0,04

The typical representatives of this steel class are AISI 410 in the USA and North America, 10X13 (or EZh1) in CIS countries, X10 Cr13 in Europe. Composition and properties of the above materials do not differ from each other fundamentally.

In the annealed condition martensitic stainless steels have the following complex of their physical and mechanical properties:

  • Tensile strength - 480...520 MPa;
  • Limit of plasticity - 280...300 MPa;
  • Relative elongation at tension - 28 ... 32%;
  • Brinell hardness - not more than 80...85 НВ.

All steels of the given class have middle weldability that improves at submerged-arc welding.

Application

Martensitic stainless steels are considerably hardened by their heat treatment, standard mode of which is heating to the temperatures of 980...10000 С, followed by slow cooling in the air, or in heated quenching media. To remove internal stresses, tempering is necessary (the practically applicable temperature range is 500...5500 C). Tempering at lower temperatures is accompanied by grain growth, which reduces the ability of martensitic stainless steels to plastic deformation, especially in the cold state.

The steels in question are used:

  • In the manufacture of cutting and locksmithing tools used in the hot working of low-carbon steel billets and nonferrous alloys;
  • In the manufacture of turbine blades and other parts of power equipment, which operates in corrosive environments, and at high operating temperatures;
  • For high-strength fasteners and connecting parts of fittings of gas and oil pipelines;
  • In machines and devices of food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
