Machining, rolling and deforming tungsten

Recrystallization

Recrystallization of deformed tungsten proceeds in the temperature range of 1450 - 1600 C. During hot pressing, glass lubricant is used to reduce contact friction between the ingot and the tool and to maintain the temperature of the ingot.

Pressing

Tungsten is preheated to high temperatures, and pressing is done quickly to reduce deformation resistance and maintain ductility. The first hot deformation is usually performed from a billet diameter of 65 mm to 45 mm (t° 1800- 1900° C) on a press with a force of 12 MN (1200 T). The second pressing to a diameter of 20-25 mm is (t° 1350-1500°C).

Processing optimization

To reduce the press force tungsten billet is heated to higher temperatures, but the structure of the metal is obtained coarse-grained, which significantly worsens further processing. Processing at low temperatures provides a fine-grained structure of the metal, but also requires more effort.
