Terbium applications, physical and mechanical properties

Technical Characteristics

Terbium is a silvery-white metal of the group of heavy lanthanides. The chemical symbol is Tb. Its atomic weight is 158.925. It is industrially isolated from a mixture of rare earth elements and recovered by metallothermic method. The melting point is 1356 °C, the specific gravity is about 8.3 g/cm³, the t° of boiling is 3227 °C. In air under normal conditions this metal is quite stable, but in boiling water it begins to form hydroxide Tb (OH)3. It dissolves in mineral acids to form salts.

Usage

Production of phosphors, lasers, magnetic and thermoelectric materials, semiconductor parts for computers, magnetostrictive alloys. Alloy Fe-Tb is currently the best magnetostrictive material, used for the production of powerful servomotors (e.g. telescopes), for ultrasonic radiators with absolute sound wave strength.
