Rare and refractory metals

Technical Characteristics

Refractory rare metals (with an unfinished electron shell) are transitional elements of Group IV, V, VI of the periodic system 'Mendeleev. The atomic structure determines their unique chemical and physical properties: the refractoriness of these elements ranges from 1660 degrees (t° melting of titanium) to 3400 degrees (t° melting of tungsten). They are known for their exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. Their variable valence gives rise to a wide range of compounds. All of them can form solid refractory silicides, carbides and borides.

Production

The most effective method is electron-beam melting. Semiproducts are formed by powder metallurgy. Further technology consists in processing of obtained powder porous mass - sponges. Sintering is carried out by the traditional method of powder metallurgy, i.e. arc melting.
