Vanadium physical and mechanical properties. Applications.

Technical Characteristics

Vanadium is a ductile, strong metal similar to steel. Its melting point is about 1920 °C and its density is 6.11 g/cm³. Vanadium is fairly chemically inert. It is resistant to water and diluted solutions of alkali and acids. With oxygen it forms several oxides: V2 O3, VO, V2 O5, VO2. VC carbide is extremely refractory and melts only at 2800 °C.

Usage

About ¾ of all vanadium mined is used as an alloying agent in the smelting of wear- and corrosion-resistant high-temperature alloys and also as an additive in the production of magnetic alloys. V2 O5 is a catalyst in the synthesis of sulfuric acid, it accelerates oxidation of sulfuric gas into sulfuric gas. Other oxides can form stable pigments, are used in textile, paint and varnish, glass industries.
