Composition and properties

AISI 416 (1.4005) Martensitic grade stainless steel is a low carbon steel with high chromium and manganese content. Under the name X12CrS13 it is produced in Europe (according to DIN German standard and UNS S 41600 technical requirements for its production). The closest analogue is stainless steel 08Cr13 GOST 5632.

The chemical composition of AISI 416 steel (1.4005) is as follows:

Alloying component Carbon Manganese Silicon Chrome Iron
Percentage content in the material Not more than 0.15 Not more than 1.5 Not more than 0,1 12...14 The rest

As impurities in the composition of this steel, sulfur (allowed not more than 0.03%) and phosphorus (allowed up to 0.06%) are present.

Among the most important physical and mechanical properties of steel are:

  • Temporary resistance limit - 520...800 MPa;
  • Modulus of elasticity (Young's) - 210 GPa;
  • Coefficient of thermal diffusion - 8.5 m3/s;
  • Specific thermal conductivity - 30 W/mK.

ASTM A240 recommends that this steel be used in the manufacture of pressure vessels that are subjected to continuous mechanical and corrosive wear. The heat resistance of the steel is maintained at the required level up to temperatures of 550...6000 C.

Application

AISI 416 (1.4005) stainless steel is amenable to heat treatment. During quenching a martensitic structure is formed, which provides the material increased surface wear resistance, while the pitting corrosion resistance indicators remain practically unchanged. To maintain the same machinability characteristics, hardening of steel products made from bulk rolled metal products is made after the final machining or deformation treatment.

Steel is not recommended for use in equipment parts that operate at low temperatures, because in such operating conditions the elastic and plastic properties of the material deteriorate. However, during the melting of steel AISI 416 (1.4005) is actively formed chromium and iron sulfides, which positively affects the processing of cutting, as well as the stability of the operations of punching and punching in the dies. Anticorrosive resistance of steel is maintained up to temperatures of 350-38800 С, which should be taken into account in practice of application of this material for separate parts of technological equipment and pipelines.

It is profitable and economically feasible to buy stainless bulk rolled metal products - pipes, wires, bars - made of AISI 416 (1.4005) steel, as supplies of these products from Evek GmbH can be made in a wide range of lengths and diameters, with prices from the manufacturer
