Molybdenum powder. Grades, chemical composition.

Characteristics

Molybdenum is the 42nd element in the periodic table of Mendeleev, in which it is designated by the symbol Mo. It is a heavy refractory metal with a lead color, has a specific weight of 10.2 g/cm³, melting point 2620 °C. Molybdenum powder is a gray finely dispersed mass containing at least 99.196% Mo. It is used as a catalyst, an alloying agent for heat-resistant alloys. It serves as a base for semiconductor substrates and parts of electrical engineering. Molybdenum sputtering on the surface of parts increases the strength and performance of mechanisms.

Production

The main brand of molybdenum powder is MMPh grade, which is produced in accordance with TU 48-19-316-80 "Molybdenum powder. Technical conditions". This grade has Mo content of not less than 99.5%, 92% of grains have size up to 5 microns.

Use

The powder serves as a raw material for producing compact molybdenum. It is first formed into stacks of various sizes by powder metallurgy. In turn, the stacks are blanks for the production of molybdenum wire, sheets, rods. Its advances in Mo allow it to be used as an alloying agent.

Advantages of molybdenum:

- The density of Mo (10.2 g/cm3) is almost half that of tungsten (19.3 g/cm3), so molybdenum-based alloys at t° up to 1370 °C, exhibit greater specific strength;

- High melting point and heat resistance;

- high modulus of elasticity;

- Low thermal expansion coefficient;

- stable in alkaline solutions, in hydrochloric, hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids of various concentrations;

- has a small thermal neutron capture cross-section.

Disadvantages

- Mo has a small scale;

- insufficient plasticity at low temperatures;

- brittleness of welds;

- hardening of molybdenum with hardening can be used only at up to 700-800 ° C, and at higher temperatures because of the return occurs unstrengthening.
