General Characteristics

Chemical properties

Under normal conditions it oxidizes slowly, but when heated rapidly it ignites, forming a mixture of 3- and 4-valent oxide. By calcining it in an atmosphere of CH4 or H2, Pr2 O3 oxide is obtained. PrO2 dioxide is formed in an O2 atmosphere at a pressure of 10 MPa.

Applications

Used as a base for magnetic alloys together with neodymium. In laser optics it is used for generation of infra-red radiation with wavelength of 1050 nm in creation of solid and liquid lasers. Praseodymium oxide gives glass a pale green hue. is used to optimize the performance of thermoelectric alloys of rare earth elements with a thermal EMF of 55 μV/K. The alloy of this metal with silicon and germanium is a superconducting material. Praseodymium is used in electric vacuum technology to increase efficiency of cathodes and in production of magnetic cores. Praseodymium salts help in controlling the nuclear magnetic resonance process. The metal is used for alloying steel, ceramics and medicine. In alloys with other nonferrous metals it is used for producing rounds, wires, sheets and strips.
