Niobium grades

Niobium (Nb) is the 41st element in the periodic table of D. I. Mendeleev. Atomic weight 93.986, melting point 2741°K, boiling point 5015°K. It is a bright grayish-silvery metal, which has a volume-centred cubic crystal lattice of the form α-Fe, a = 0.3294 nm.

Advantages

Production of niobium is increasing rapidly due to the organic combination of its properties such as small thermal neutron capture cross-section, refractoriness, ability to form heat resistant and superconducting alloys, getter properties, corrosion resistance, low electron yielding work, excellent hot and cold pressure machinability and weldability. The main uses of niobium are in space and aviation engineering, the military, electronics, radio engineering, nuclear power and industrial chemistry.

Disadvantages

This metal is quite expensive. Niobium metal dust is flammable and irritating to the skin and eyes. Some of its compounds are very toxic. The maximum permissible concentration of niobium is 0.01 mg/l. Once in the human body, this element causes severe neuritis and subsequent paralysis of the limbs.

Applications

Pure niobium and its alloys are used for the production of aircraft and missile parts, shells for plutonium and uranium atomic boilers (niobium carbide, melting point 3480 ° C), containers for metals in liquid form. Liquid potassium and sodium used as heat carriers in nuclear reactors move through niobium tubes. Niobium is characterized by low induced (artificial) radioactivity and is used to make containers for storing radioactive waste. It is in demand in production of electrolytic capacitors; "hot" fittings of powerful generator and electronic lamps and (cathodes, anodes, grids, etc.). Niobium alloys are used to produce corrosion-resistant equipment in the chemical industry. It is alloyed with nonferrous metals, including uranium. Niobium is used in cryotrons - superconducting components of calculating machines. It is also well known for its use in accelerating structures for the andron collider.

Steel tubes alloyed with niobium have the highest strength and corrosion resistance. Packaged pipes can be transported as desired. In transit, they are protected against mechanical deformation, moisture and the effects of active chemicals.
