General Characteristics

Under ordinary conditions, zirconium is a shiny steel-gray metal with a yellowish tint. It is a paramagnetic, heat and corrosion resistant, ductile material. It is obtained from ore concentrates and by remelting zirconium waste. This metal is resistant to aggressive media. It retains its characteristics at high and cryogenic temperatures. Zirconium unusual properties are used for alloying of important alloys and steels. The metal not only imparts zirconium heat and corrosion resistance but also increases technological capability.

Production

Zirconium wire is produced cold drawn and drawn under cold pressure and is distinguished by its hardness and resilience. Soft wire, also called annealed wire, is also produced. Cold drawn wire based on zirconium alloy with 1-2.5% niobium (diameter from 0.9 to 3 mm) after vacuum annealing with etched surface is checked for the absence of pores. Used for windings of superconducting magnets. Zirconium round is alloyed with silicon and other elements to impart strength (e.g. with a niobium additive of 1-2.5%). It can also be rolled from alloy E-635. Round is made cold and hot-formed (hot-pressed), as well as cast and forged. According to the accuracy it can be of high and usual accuracy. Diameter circles are usually from 4.5 to 80 mm. and length up to 7400 mm. It is produced in accordance with GOST under the name "Zirconium and siliconized zirconium bars". It is used in electro-vacuum and special machine engineering.


The wire is usually rolled up to Ø 0.1-3.9 mm.

Storage and Transportation

Coils of zirconium wire are packed with paper and placed in a wooden crate lined with three layers of polyethylene film. Packing should exclude shifting inside the package during transportation.
