Composition and properties

Steel grade AISI 409 (1.4512) is a low carbon steel of ferrite class, stabilized with titanium, which increases its resistance to intergranular corrosion. The European analogue of this material is steel X6 CrTi 12, and the nearest domestic brand is steel 08Cr12T1. The chemical composition of the steel is as follows:

In comparison with composition mentioned in the table, steel 08X12T1 smelted according to TU differs with a little bit increased tolerance on the titanium content (0,3...0,8%). The steel 08X13 GOST 5632 is considered less close analogue of the material, the titanium in which is defined at impurity level (up to 0,1%). The remaining metallurgical impurities in this material are sulfur and phosphorus, the amount of which is limited technologically (sulfur - to 0,025%, phosphorus - to 0,03%).

Rolled sheets made of AISI 409 (1.4512) steel have the following physical and mechanical properties:

  • Ultimate tensile strength of sheet samples, MPa - 410...430;
  • Ultimate ductility of sheet and strip material, MPa, at least - 300;
  • Relative elongation, % - 21...23;
  • Relative narrowing of cross-section, % - not less than 50;
  • Brinell hardness, units - not more than 140.

The special features of steel is its limited weldability and propensity for tempering brittleness, so in most cases the material is subjected to annealing in controlled atmospheres. The weldability of the steel is very limited. Rolled sheets in this steel are workable by pressure, but machining should preferably be carried out at lower than normally recommended cutting tool feeds.

Applications

This grade of stainless steel sheet and strip is used in the manufacture of parts that must have increased ductility with high-temperature corrosion resistance. First of all, they are the parts experiencing significant impact loads: blades of powerful turbines, blades of ventilation systems, as well as those working with gases - the products of metallurgical reactions.

Rather high durability is demonstrated by the articles made of steel AISI 409 (1.4512) that are used in low-aggressive environments at the working temperatures of 450...5000 С. They include parts of food production apparatuses that are constantly exposed to the surface effects of abrasive particles and elevated temperatures. Steel performs well in constant contact with heated exhaust gases, including those containing chlorine vapors and carbon dioxide.
