Composition and properties

AISI 409A (1.4105) is a low-carbon steel of the ferrite class, whose structure is stabilized with titanium during production. Unlike the main grade, this steel has an additional index A, which indicates that it is not heat-treated before being rolled. The steel has a higher resistance to intergranular corrosion than usual. The nearest European analogue of the material is stainless steel X6CrTi12. In the domestic metallurgy stainless steel of 08Cr12Ti1 grade is more often used as a substitute for this steel.

In contrast to the considered analog steel 08X12T1, which is produced according to company's specifications, has higher tolerance for titanium percentage (up to 0,8%, which increases the performance indicators). Steel 08Cr13 according to GOST 5632 can be used for similar purposes. Among the unavoidable metallurgical impurities in AISI 409A (1.4105) steel are sulfur and phosphorus. In the finished rolled products their amount is limited to the following indicators: sulfur - not more than 0.025%, and phosphorus not more than 0.03%.

Sheets and strips of stainless steel AISI 409A (1.4105) have these physical and mechanical parameters:

  • Tensile strength limit (for the sheet), MPa - 405...420;
  • Plasticity limit, MPa, not less - 280;
  • Relative elongation, % - 23...25;
  • Relative narrowing of cross-section, % (for volumetric blanks) - not below 55;
  • Brinell hardness is not above 135...140 units.

The peculiarities of steel in its delivery are the increased plasticity and the limited weldability. At the same time there is no tendency to temper embrittlement because of the obligatory annealing. Rolled sheets of this steel is well processed by plastic deformation methods, including at high rates of production equipment and in cold condition.

Application of

Sheets and straps of steel AISI 409A (1.4105) is recommended for the production of flat and three-dimensional items, which require high-temperature resistance to mechanical-corrosive wear. These parts include blades of steam and gas turbines, fan blades of blowers in metallurgical industry as well as fastening and sealing elements that are in constant contact with chemically aggressive media.
