Titanium is the material that Captain Nemo lacked to turn the legendary Nautilus into a perpetual ship. It is unlikely that in the near future there will be an alloy that would be an alternative to such a strong and light metal as titanium.

Advantages of

Titanium bars have high heat resistance, wear resistance, easy weldability. Plasticity - at the level of copper wire. Low creep - similar to stainless steel. Titanium rod has exceptional corrosion resistance in wet soil, sea and chlorinated water. The corrosion rate is less than 0.002 mm/year. The resistance is excellent in chlorine, chlorine oxide, nitric acid at elevated temperatures, in petroleum products, in caustic potash and sodium mixtures at concentrations up to40%, in boiling solutions of 20% NH3 OH, in molten sulphur environment up to 240°C, in industrial gas atmosphere and SО2, in water solutions of H2 S and sulphuric salts, caustic soda.

Disadvantages

The prime cost of titanium bars is rather high owing to the complexity of the production technology. Durability, heat resistance of titanium makes the processing much heavier.

Manufacturing

The following alloys are used: VT 1-00, VT 1-0, OT 4-0, OT 4-1, VT 3-1, VT 8, VT 8 m, VT 8m-1, VT 9, VT 5, VT 5-1, VT 6, VT 6c, VT 6h, VT 14, VT 20, VT 22, VT 23, VT 18u, VT 16, VT 25u, TC6, 3M, PT3 B, alloy 19, 5B, alloy 37. Production is normalized by the following OST: 1-90 173, 1-90 006, 1-90 266, 1-90 201, 1-90 202, 1-92 062, GOST 26 492 and such TU: 1-5-401, 1-805-014, 1-92-117, 1-805-042, 1-5-045, 1-805-132, 1-805-019, 1-92-22, 1-92-131, 1-805-178, 1825-216-7 510 017, 1-805-012,1-805-239. Methods of manufacturing titanium bar depend on the application. Pressing, forging, helical rolling (HRC) or bar rolling are used. Production is regulated by the following standards. Hot-rolled steel bar with unground surface (OST 1 90 173-75, GOST 26 492-85). Mechanically calibrated and ground bar (OST 1 90 201-75). Bar VT16 for the production of fasteners by turning and hot upsetting (OST 1 90 202-75). Bar forged (OST 1 90 107-73), pressed (OST 1 92 020-82). Large bars are produced by rolling a forged billet (OST 1 90 266-86). Bar for shipbuilding (OST 1 92 062-90). Rolled bar made of general purpose titanium alloys (TU 1-83-21-79). Surface may be ground and honed. Products may be of measured, nominal and multiple measured length with maximum deviations within measured length.

Marking

Titanium bars are produced in standard and elevated quality. The latter, according to GOST 26 492-85, is marked with the letter "P". For example: VT-5.P. Titanium rod of normal quality - supplied without additional markings.

Storage

Rolled titanium is stored in covered warehouses or under a shed, where appropriate protection against mechanical and other types of damage is ensured. In this condition, titanium bars can be stored for an indefinite period of time.

Use

Production of lightweight, robust and durable parts for aircraft, helicopters, submarines and automobiles. Acid resistance and corrosion resistance are critical in petrochemical and processing industries, while in agriculture, food processing, medicine, jewelry industry - titanium biological inertness.
