Tape, strip niobium nb-1, nb-2

Advantages

Pure niobium is ductile and can be cold-rolled into very thin strips (up to a thickness of 0.01 mm) without intermediate annealing. Its ultimate strength varies little between 20 °C and 800 °C: from 342 to 312 MN/m2 (34.2 - 31.2 kgf/mm2); similarly, its relative elongation varies little: from 19.2% at 20 °C to 20.7% at 800 °C. Electromechanical properties of niobium, its extreme refractoriness (melting point 2468 ° C), allow for the production of such ribbon anodes, cathodes, grids for electric vacuum devices. This metal has a minimum work on the yield of electrons (electron emission Nb 4.01 ev) compared with similar refractory elements used in the electrovacuum technique - tungsten and molybdenum. Niobium also has a high transition temperature to the state of superconductivity.

Production

Niobium sheet and strip is manufactured using ingot, which is obtained by powder metallurgy. The powder metal is sintered into any shape required for processing. The ingot is drawn into a strip by extrusion, i. e. by pressing the plastic workpiece through a flat-form matrix slot, after which the strip is annealed in a vacuum-type furnace and cooled. The working temperature of the metal to make the strip is often over 1500 °C, the finished product is then cooled to 780-800 °C. The result is a ¼ mm thick ribbon with a uniform grain, which is rolled to the required parameters.

Use of

Sheets and strips are used in the instrument-making industry, machine-building, military-industrial complex and especially in the aerospace industry. As niobium is resistant to hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric and organic acids of any concentration up to 150 °C, it is used to produce fittings for the chemical and processing industries. At the end of the twentieth century, such qualities of niobium were especially valuable as the lack of significant interaction with uranium at temperatures up to 1100 ° C, high thermal conductivity, as well as the narrow absorption cross-section of thermal neutrons and minimal induced radioactivity. This has allowed niobium to occupy a worthy place in the nuclear power industry along with aluminum, beryllium, and zirconium. Containers for storing radioactive waste and cladding for fuel elements are the most common forms of niobium sheet.
