Niobium wire

Production

The niobium mining scheme is similar to that of tantalum, for which reason the two are very often produced together. The main source of pure metal is concentrate containing approximately 8% niobium oxide. The technology of producing a circle or wire depends on its subsequent use. Products may have impurities in their composition that enhance the most important qualities. Often the wire is made to order and the diameter can be as small as a few microns. High-tech equipment is required to manufacture such products, the quality must be high and the parameters are taken into account to the fractions of a micron. Wire and circles are typical forms of semi-finished products for further industrial use. They are indispensable at the forefront of modern industry thanks to their extraordinary advantages: the highest reliability, ductility, exceptional corrosion resistance and heat resistance.

The following grades of niobium are produced.

Grade Nb Diameter (mm) Length (mm) OKP code
Nb 1 120 400 - 1250 17 6333 0111 06
Nb 1 150 400 - 1250 17 6333 0112 05
Nb 1 200 400 - 1250 17 6333 0113 04
Nb 1 250 400 - 1250 17 6333 0114 03

Quality specifications

Shrinkage shells and irregularities are acceptable on the samples. But such defects must not go beyond the tolerances allowed by the standard. Where there is a break, the circle must remain whole and contain no extraneous inclusions or voids. The surface of the wire must be clean, without cracks. Minor roughness or traces of broaching are permitted,

Advantages

Pure niobium is extremely ductile and can be rolled into the thinnest wire to a thickness of 0.01 mm. The ultimate strength of niobium varies little from 20 to 800 ° C: from 34.2 to 31.2 kgf/ mm 2; just as little varies the relative elongation: from 19.2% at 20 ° C to 20.7%. at 800 ° C. The refractoriness of such wire allows to produce anodes, cathodes, grids of electrovacuum devices of high voltage. Besides, the electron emission equal to 4.01 eV is less compared to the similar refractory elements tungsten and molybdenum used in electric vacuum technology.

Applications

Niobium is in demand in modern instrumentation, industrial chemistry, rocket science and nuclear engineering. Because it has a particularly strong atomic bond, its melting point is very high. 2468 °C. In the chemical industry, this metal has become a substitute for platinum. It is used in the manufacture of parts of equipment that are resistant to acids and cooling and heating devices that come into contact with aggressive substances. Niobium wire is used to produce superconductors based on niobium-tin and niobium-titanium. Silicon niobium wire is used in electronics, and niobium-manganese wire is used in mercury rectifiers, aircraft and automotive spark plugs.
