Cold drawing

Cold drawing of steel pipes is carried out on pipe drawing mills in different ways. In cold drawing, the pipe is pulled through a drawing mandrel, the diameter of which is equal to the pipe's outside diameter. When drawing on mandrels, the diameter is determined by the inside diameter of the pipe. Before starting the cold drawing, one end of the pipe is hammered in, it passes through the drawing frame and is tacked at the back of the pipe drawing mill, by a cart. The cart is driven by a drawing chain, which is connected to the mill motor via a gearbox and sprocket. Before drawing, the pipe undergoes preparatory and intermediate operations, as in the case of cold rolling.

Tube drawing without mandrel

Only used to reduce pipe diameter. The deformation is 10-35% and the drawing ratio is 1.1-1.5. When in the process of drawing the diameter decreases, accordingly the wall thickness changes in proportion to the ratio S/D/. Experiments have shown that if this ratio is greater than 0.165-190, wall thickness increases, if less, thickness decreases.

Drawing with a mandrel

When drawing on a short mandrel mounted on a rod, there is a process of diameter and wall thickness reduction, the deformation is limited by the strength of the pipe. A mandrel with a minimum diameter of 8-10 mm is limited by the fixing bars. Drawing on a long mandrel, which moves in the process of drawing with the pipe, billet walls are used to reduce the thickness, at the same time the diameter is reduced. The total deformation will be much greater as the friction forces are directed towards the drawing. Drawing pipes with thin walls of 0.2-0.1 mm and Ø up to 3 mm, is the only way to make them.
Dragging on a self-aligning mandrel also serves to reduce wall thickness and diameter. Such a mandrel is not fixed in the fiber, but is held in the center of deformation by friction forces. Drawing of long tubes (up to 100 mm in drum drawing) is practiced.

Tube drawing by distribution

Used in the manufacture of very large diameter thin-walled tubes, with calibration of the inner diameter to obtain accurate tolerances for the manufacture of double layer pipes and for correction of defects.

Pipe rolling in rotating rolls

Used for the production of sectional tubes with symmetrical profile in the last stage, the drawer carries a round tube.
