Features of manual arc welding of brass billets
The presence of zinc in the composition of this alloy (as a consequence of which the temperatures in the weld zone are reduced), predetermines the choice of two types of arc welding:
- Manual welding using a carbon electrode;
- Semi-automatic welding with non-consumable electrode.
Both varieties are realized under a layer of flux (sometimes even with the supply of gaseous metaborates through the special hose to the welding zone). Fluxes bind oxides formed in the weld zone and transfer them to slags. At the same time, the temperature is lowered and the risk of evaporation of fumes of relatively low-melting zinc, which are toxic to humans, is reduced.
Manual arc welding is used for non-detachable connections of brass products with a small (up to 2… 3 mm) thickness, without using a welding wire. A powdery flux is used, which covers the treatment zone and does not allow the escape of zinc vapor beyond its boundaries. When welding thicker workpieces, filler wire is used, preferably also brass, which contains silicon, which is an effective deoxidizer.

Technology of mechanized arc welding of brass
Since the brass has less heat than copper, the arc current during welding is reduced by 25… 30%. This excludes overheating of the metal in the weld pool formation zone, which in turn leads to the formation of a coarse-grained structure, with reduced strength and ductility. Arc welding is carried out «short», no more than 15… 20 mm arc, at a voltage not exceeding 20 V. It is desirable to use fluxes, both fused (containing an increased percentage of manganese) and special non-melted, on a ceramic basis.
For welding, a constant reverse polarity current is used, and rods with a surface coating in which silicon bronze is present are used as electrodes. At butt-arc welding, copper electrodes can be used.
